As with all major national events there was a major bidding was that took place between artists for the once-a-century competition of “Who gets to brand the Olympics”. It turns out that Wolf Olinns won with his design which I don’t hate, but enjoy the opinion polarisation that followed.

Only on rare occasions do we get the chance to take a glimpse of what we indeed ‘could have won’ in competitions like these, but for the London 2012 Olympics bid, we can gaze upon these posters created by Alan Clarke in his attempt at wooing the panel. The designs show a use of minimalist representations of the sports linked to a logo of the nearest London underground tube station, allowing spectators to navigate around the city catching the right events at the right location. He uses the shapes to convey movement and energy which of course, fits harmoniously with the daily buzz of any London underground network. I think they’re beautiful, but more forgettable than the victor.

All we can do now is look, appreciate and think about what could we could have won.
